3-19 to 3-29 Dry Tortugas to Key West

We had a difficult time leaving the Dry Tortugas on Thursday. Our anchor would not come up, something big and heavy was stuck to it and we couldn’t push it off with a boat hook. The tour boats hadn’t come in yet, so we went over to the dock to see if the Park Rangers could help. It turned out to be a very rusted 55 gallon drum - so much for the pristine environment of the park! We nosed the front of the boat over the beach, let down the anchor and a park volunteer easily removed our anchor from the drum.

We had a pretty rough ride back to Key West, including a waterspout. A waterspout is basically a tornado made of water. The next day we had a call from Buterfluge asking if we wanted to join them for dinner that night. So we took the dinghy to town for dinner with Bob and Sue, their friends John and Pat from Delaware, and Debbie and John (Wanderlust).

We really had had our fill of the Key West bars etc. the previous week we were there, and only planned to stop briefly on our way to Marathon. The weather had other plans for us. The winds really picked up and we spent a week and a half waiting for the wind, waves and small craft warnings to stop. Every morning we would get up, listen to the weather forecast on the radio, groan, and then crawl back into bed or the couch and read. I got through quite a few books that week. Dave caught some more fish (edible). Life is tough, I know.
