2-16 to 2-17 Manatee River to Venice FL

We continued down the intracoastal to Venice, where there is a free public dock that Mike and Stacy told us about. The wind was supposed to pick up for the next few days so the idea of being docked instead of anchored sounded good. A small 20 foot or so sailboat came in behind us and we helped them dock, then went for a walk around the town.

Venice is a small town with, according to one of our guide books, a population whose average age is 70. I can say that relative to the people we saw walking around we felt like kids. When we got back to the boat the people from the sailboat knocked and came in for a few drinks. John and Martie (who are in their 60’s) actually live on their sailboat 4 months a year! I wish I’d gotten a picture of it. The boat was a masterpiece of using every inch to it’s maximum.

The next day we took our first official ‘walk on a beach’ of the trip and I collected my first sea shells. Back at the boat we entertained a host of visitors. It seems that in Venice it is a regular pass time for people to walk by the docks and visit with whoever is there. It was a quiet and pleasant place.
