Definition: Noun 1. a striking change, as in appearance, often for the better. 2. any major transformation or alteration.
3. a transformation brought about by the sea.
Soon after Dave and I met we started fantasizing about "taking off" and traveling around the Caribbean on a boat. Dave is an avid boater, and I am an avid fan of almost any adventure that involves travel. We were married nearly 9 years ago and at that point we developed a 5 year plan to achieve this dream.
In 2004 we purchased a 48' McKinna motor yacht that had sunk in the Alleghany River just outside of Pittsburgh PA. We lived in Buffalo NY, and for 4 years we travelled to Pittsburgh on weekends and vacations to restore the boat.
In July 2007 we quit our jobs, sold our house, and moved onto the boat (now named SeaChange) thinking that we would be under way that fall. However, as with so many of the best laid plans the boat wasn't ready by the time we had to leave and we wound up delaying the trip for a year.
Now, finally, we are prepared to head off on the journey we have been dreaming about and working towards for almost 13 years!
Why SeaChange?
When we started on this journey we intended it to be a major transformation of our lives. From corporate jobs and a suburban lifestyle to... well, we aren't really quite sure what. That is part of the point. Obviously the boat has undergone a major transformation as well.
During the process of preparing for this adventure 'change' seems to have become a way of life for us. Our departure date as well as many other plans changed numerous times. We must have changed the boat name a million times. So finally, when it came down to the deadline for picking a name for the boat we settled on SeaChange, as it captures what this whole experience has been and hopefully will be about.
Above is an emblem I created for the boat. It represents waves (the sea) changing direction; and that in the past the boat was below the water (under the wave going from right to left) but now it is above the water (above the wave going from left to right).
Where Are We Going?
Currently we are at the Oakmont Yacht Club on the Alleghany River just north of Pittsburgh. We will travel south to the Ohio River, the Tennessee River and the Tombigbee Waterway. We will spend about a month in Tennessee waiting for Hurricane season to end (December 1) and then head to the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway at Mobile Alabama. That portion of the trip is approximately 1600 miles.
Then we will head to the Florida Keys and spend approximately a month there trying to get some insight from locals as to what islands we should try to visit. After that ... we'll keep you posted!
