Anchors Aweigh! 10/10/08 - 10/15/08

10/10/08 Oakmont Pa - Chester WV 58 miles

We had planned to leave Oakmont at 8am, but it was foggy so we waited for the air to clear. This worked incredibly well for Dave and I as we had water in our transmission oil. Because of the fog Dave was able to change the oil without us having to feel responsible for delaying our start time (we left at 10).

We cannot say enough about the wonderful members and staff of the Oakmont Yacht Club (OYC). We originally joined because many yacht clubs have reciprocal agreements and members can stay at other clubs really inexpensively. It was a way to hopefully save some dock fees on the trip. Most unexpectedly we found a home. We had a great last night there and many of the people we have become friends with came by for a drink and to wish us well.

While staying at Oakmont this summer our friend Terry introduced us to Warren and Layla. They are originally from California and moved to Pittsburgh a couple of years ago as part of their dream to travel the Great Loop in their 42 foot Grand Banks trawler named Time Out. As it turned out they were planning to head in the same direction as we were and were leaving around the same time so we decided to travel together part of the way. So you may be hearing a lot about them for a while.

This was our first home in Pittsburgh, Fox Chapel Marina. Our neighbors and friends there looked after us for 4 years while we were working on the boat and made what was often a difficult time a little easier.

We traveled through 4 locks the first day. So far we have been able to go straight through, no waiting and no disasters. Knock on wood!
The first day we traveled 58 miles to Chester West Virginia and stayed at the Holiday Marina. We were all exhausted when we got in and after a quick drink on our boat we all had soup for dinner and went to bed.
